Lets talk
I was getting progressively more inebriated while writing this… This should be considered somewhat of a satire/drunken rant.
Whiskey or Whisky?
I. don’t. care! Both are correct.

Best Whisky
There’s none. If it tastes good to you its good whisky!
BUUUUUUUUUT
Do yourself a favor and try different whiskeys across categories and styles. What tastes ‘good’ now, could taste like a swill in comparison to something else. Don’t settle for first thing and definitely explore. You’re doing yourself a disservice by not trying new things here, just like most things in life: The more you try, the better you understand.

Drinking whisky properly
a) Whiskeys are not shot drinks. If you want shots, do Jack Daniels or some some other garbage. Whiskey is contemplative drinks to be drank without anything. Have a conversation. Have a sigar (and peated scotch). Discuss with friends. Look at the fire dancing in a fireplace. Stare at the stars. Write a ranting post on personal website where nobody will ever read it.
b) If you want to drink whisky as an accompaniment with food instead of shitty vodka? Sure. Don’t use good stuff. Get a bottle of generic blend, its cheap. Get a branded release of a major distillery that is under 12 years of age. Impress your friends or family with your fancy name of ‘Macallan 12′ (which you won’t taste at all if combined with food) bottle. Don’t overdo it. You can put ice tea and vodka into a Macallan 18 bottle and if you combine it with food someone will be invariably amazed by how good that ’scotch’ is. Don’t spend more than about $50.
c) Good stuff first! or ‘the fallacy of taste’. After about 3rd or 4th taste, everything mushes up together and it all tastes about same. If not sure, only drink one thing per sitting.

Glass…
This one is controversial. I highly recommend glencairn or brandy glass or something similarly shaped. I’ve had whisky out of coffee mugs and out of champagne flutes. It’s just not as good. The whole dimension of smell and (surprisingly) some of the taste is lost. A wine glass works in a pinch as long its lip curves inwards. Rocks glass is okay in some situations.

Ice…
If you insist on lots of crushed ice with whisky. Fuck you, you uncultured swine! Don’t be that pretentious asshole that has no idea what they are doing with scotch on the rocks.
If you want small ice cube to keep it cold/cut the burn… that’s occasionally acceptable. Almost no bottles are blindly filled from the barrel. There are many people between the still and the bottle in your hands, and they know what they are doing with the source material so it’s my strong opinion that whatever is in the bottle should be consumed as is, unaltered. Some bottles respond okay to few drops of water, most do not. Some times that same effect as water can be achieved by simply waiting.

Right way of drinking whiskey?
There really isn’t one. Do what works for you individually though respect others opinions.
Today lets run down new to the shelf additions:
Grain whiskey… It’s an interesting thing. Lately I’ve come to the conclusion that there are some tremendous bargains to be had with grain whiskey without compromising on the insane price points that single malts have been going for lately (with no sign of stopping). What’s the catch? Well that’s simple, Jimmy! Its age… My overall opinion that grain whiskeys need 5 to 10 years longer in the barrel to get ‘interesting’ but ‘interesting’ they do get. Note: “Single Grain” can mean a lot of things but typically means that its not 100% malted barley and/or continuous (column) still vs pot stills which are required for single malt scotch. Then again, Loch Lomond was 100% malted barley in a vodka still… soooo I guess ‘Single Grain’ is sometimes a way to denote things that are scotch but not fall under ‘Single Malt’ as defined by regulations.
Invergordon 26 Single Grain
Almost oily consistency. Smells like perfume again. On the tongue, barrel char fights with strawberry jam and all sorts of sweet candied white fruits. Lovely. In your face. Musky. Powerful. One of those contemplative scotches one should try.

Glenmorangie Allta
Glenmorangie 10th special edition. I feel like I just wrapped up writing about the 9th and now a new contender have entered the ring. Overall? Its more of my style of drink when I want something light and sweet. This time the distillery focused on natural yeasts rather than experimenting with barrels or blending. In many ways it reminds me of the regular 12, with a 3rd dimension of ‘interesting’ added in. Honey and wax. Tiny bit of smoke and nuts both in the smell and the taste. Almost like a mix between 12 and 18 release taking the best of the two and mixing them together.

Glen Oak 17
You thought it was a no-name, but it was me Bruichladdich all along! Briny, funky, interesting, almost swamp-watery in some ways… I don’t use ‘old leather’ very often but this one is definitely in that general idea when I sip it slowly and chew in my mouth. Highly dry and dusty… maybe like licking an cry leather couch or a horse saddle… but in a good way. Definitely one of the more divisive tastes for my palate but overall I’m glad I have it on my shelf.

BenRiach 15 Pedro Ximenes
For ~$50 this is a no-brainer if you like sherry-finished juice. It’s no Macallan or Glendronach (aged fully in sherry) but its nice, clean, and reasonably balanced. Reminds me a lot Kirkland 18 sherry expressions from few years back. I’m not a fan of BenRiach’s regular 12 year old release as I found it somewhat bitter on the aftertaste. The PX finish balances it with enough sherry funk to either mask the bad aftertaste notes or the extra few years have flushed bitterness from the spirit. Overall, quite pleasing drink. Nothing is outstandingly amazing but it’s well crafted and easily drank, especially if you enjoyed sherry-finished bottles in the past. I’m pleasantly surprised and will keep eye on higher-aged releases from this distillery down the road.

Kirkland 27 Blended Scotch ~$50
An interesting contrast. Inexpensive Kirkland (Alexander Murray) product that’s a 27 years of age in the bottle. On the other hand, the insides are uninspiring and almost not interesting mix for its age. Oh its smooth, slightly sweet and somewhat nutty, like roasted walnuts and flows beautifully but I guess I was hoping for something of interest after 27 years. With my eyes closed it could be 18 or 15 and I wouldn’t be able to tell a difference. Also a tiny bit of that walnut bitterness in the end doesn’t help. Was someone dumping their over-aged refill barrel stock into these and calling it a blend? Also a note of precaution for new whiskey buyers: 40% abv on independent bottler bottles is a red flag that something is ‘wrong’ with it to require being diluted to minimal legal proof for mass-market sell off.

Final Open Bottles Entry!
Glenturret 12 Single Cask:
Well this one is fun. Imagine Glendronach 12 on steroids… then make it cask strength and crank it up to 11. Super dark, super pungent, super sherry. Very very funky. At the same time beautiful mouth-coating taste, almost savory notes on the tongue and fantastic nose. It does show its young age a bit in some of the rougher notes but overall tasty and my kind of dram.

Loch Lomond 22 Single Grain Single Cask:
This one is a conundrum… On one hand, it definitely hits my ‘weird bottle’ checkbox. On the other… Technically a single malt, distilled in a vodka (pot) still. And its definitely got those vodka notes going on that even 22 years did little to mask. When freshly opened… was not a fan. It has grown on me since as it has opened up some and is somewhat of a drinkable diversion; but I’ll just say that if I had to buy it again… I wouldn’t.

Glen Garioch 15 Single Cask:
A wonderfully light highlander. Tastes like sweet apples, light spices, a little bit of citrus and summer. So light in-fact that if bottle didn’t say 55% abv I wouldn’t have believed it. Wonderful tasty light drink. Borderline flawless execution.

(Legacy) My first foray into a single cask special bottling and beginning of my love affair with a certain store and their whisky selections. Heck if i can really recall what it tasted like except sherry but it opened my eyes on the fact that there’s such thing as amazingly delicious scotches that are out there at all sorts of age and not a generic brand that’s been so ‘averaged’ out as to not have any interesting quality about them.

(Legacy) This one was just stupidly good. Period. One of the oldest malts I’ve ever had. I wrote ’single’ here originally but its actually some kind of a unique aged blend. Do not ever confuse price vs single vs blended malt as indicator of quality. This stuff was amazing. Add to the shortlist of ‘drink for the rest of the life and be happy’. Speaking of of blends… Compass box!

(Legacy) I’ve been honored to split a bottle of this by one of my (wonderful) coworkers. Thank you Darren, you awesome you! This immediately went to the top most amazing things I’ve ever had and will there forever. Yes Its impossible to get it anymore and it’s just… beautiful stuff. It blew me away while having it in an office environment. I cannot even imagine just how good it would be if taken in a contemplative situation. Hats off to John Glaser and K&L folks.

Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 15:
(Legacy) Speaking of the same co-worker… I’m totally bragging here, but heck it’s good to be the right person at the right time and place… As for the tasting notes… in short: I’m underwhelmed. Its an excellent bourbon but it by no means justifies even the full MSRP of it. I’ve not had ‘better’ (Yes, I’m aware of of the subjective irony here) bourbons but I’ve had easily on-par bourbons that are 1/3rd and less of the price and are available decent liquor store. A number of micro distilleries are producing juice that’s on-par with Pappy that’s good enough to dethrone it given enough volume, marketing, reach, etc… (if, if if). In other words… I cannot in good faith recommend Pappy to anyone based on price/performance/difficulty of acquisition ratios.

Faultline Blended Scotch Whisky:
Great, cheap blend that has a little bit of everything. Somewhat uninspiring as its lacking that little ‘zing’ as it were, aka complexity but for basically $25 who the heck’s complaining? Think quite drinkable Johny Walker for half the price and a heck of a less generic taste… Then again, I intensely dislike JW scotch so sew me! Is it ‘good’? Not really. Its been in the meh liquor cabinet for 3 years and half the bottle have been used to marinate chicken at one point but heck, I’ll finish it in the dram as a cold cure someday.

Lagavulin 16:
Ah, Lag16… The Islay workhorse of any self-respecting scotch drinker. I’m personally not a fan of peated things (as I’ve mentioned in the past), but I always keep one bottle of peated scotch on my shelf. Why? Well because in a cold weather or while being under the weather peated scotch is as good of a sore throat medicine as any cough drops. So overall if I had to pick a peated scotch that’s widely available I’d be glad to pick Lag16. Notable shout-out to Ardbeg Uugadail which I may write about later. Extra points for it being favorite scotch of both Ron Swanson and Nick Offerman, imagine the coincidence.
